The Politis Program of Civic Engagement

Civic Engagement

The Politis Program is a required General Education component that aims to foster civic engagement. It combines service-learning opportunities, volunteer work, and other forms of co-curricular community involvement to expose students to community problems, and help them develop social, civic, and cultural responsibility.

THE AIM OF THE POLITIS PROGRAM

Through these activities, students acquire a clear understanding of the link between the skills they gain through their studies and social and civic responsibility. In this way, the Politis program aims to empower its students to become responsible, pro-active, creative, and innovative citizens, who will work towards achieving solutions to community problems. It also hopes to inspire them to become leaders who will employ the skills they have acquired in their academic programs to make a positive impact on their community.

POLITIS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The Politis Program requires that undergraduates complete a total of 45 hours of service-learning activities and community volunteer work prior to their graduation. Students meet the requirement by participating in action service activities either individually and/or as part of their course work.

Action Service: Action service may involve hours of volunteer service, non-profit fund raising, and community activism.

Individual Action Service: The undergraduate student in collaboration with the Politis coordinator arranges to fulfil the Politis hours in the appropriate sites.

Action Service through Courses: Course instructors may include in their course civic engagement activities related to the specific course.

Career Development Office

The Career Development Office (CDO) supports Hellenic American University students in identifying and pursuing a career that will enhance the quality of their personal and professional lives.

More specifically, the CDO aims to:

  • Help students identify their values, needs, and goals as well as explore, cultivate and use their talents and strengths
  • Provide support, advice and guidance to students to help them make well-informed career choices and take appropriate action
  • Help students develop and use personal and professional competencies to be competitive in the labor market
  • Provide information about new jobs, trends, demands and prospects in the labor market
  • Create opportunities for productive student-employer interactions through networking, internships and access to available job vacancies
  • Identify and inform students and graduates of internship opportunities in the US, Greece and elsewhere in Europe and support them fully through the application process
  • Enhance the employability of students and graduates
Career Development Activities

The CDO supports students throughout the career development life cycle, from discovering one’s talents and strengths and developing essential professional competencies, to shaping their unique identity point and presenting themselves professionally to prospective employers.

Career Development Plan & Skills Workshops

The CDO helps students put together a Career Development Plan for the duration of their studies, and works with them to assess progress made in achieving various competencies. In light of their particular plan, students attend career development workshops each semester; topics include interpersonal communication, time management, networking, goal-setting and action planning among others.

Employment Resources

The CDO conducts employability research, collecting and providing information about labor market trends and employers’ skills demands, at a national and international level. The Office networks with potential employers to develop internship opportunities and career placements for students and graduates.

Finding a Job

Working with the CDO, students build their own Unique Identity Point and learn how to consistently and professionally communicate this to future employers. The Office also provides assistance in CV & cover letter writing, and administers mock competency-based selection interviews.

The CDO in Practice

Operating hours: 10:00 a.m.– 18:00 p.m. week days

Appointment: To arrange an individual career counselling session, you need to book an appointment first. If needed, an appointment can be scheduled after working hours.

Online career counselling sessions: In case you can't visit the CDO, we can book an online session via skype at a time and day that is convenient for you.

How to contact the CDO: To contact the CDO, you can send an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Writing Center

The Writing Center offers students and members of the public personalized assistance at all stages of the writing process and in all writing tasks and disciplines. Through its onsite and online tutors and services at the University’s Nashua and the Athens campuses, the Writing Center supports the development of confident, effective communicators and critical readers.

How the Writing Center can help you

Through the Center’s tutoring and editing services you can find help on:

Courses and writing workshops: Nashua campus

The Writing Center in Nashua offers short, non-credit seminars such as public speaker workshops to provide students who desire it, support in crafting their public speaking skills.

If you are an international MBA student and your native language is not English, you will be asked to complete an in-person written essay so that we can assess your writing skills. Depending on the result of your assessment, you may be asked to enroll in the 3-credit Graduate Business Writing course (GBW100) to build and improve those writing skills essential for your success as a graduate student.

Courses and writing workshops: Athens campus

Workshops for Fall 2023 at Athens cover a range of topics including plagiarism and documentation, writing effective emails, and writing effective abstracts. For more information and a schedule of workshops, consult the Athens campus website.

Writing Center officers

The Director of the Writing Center is Dr. Vasiliki Kourbani, who also serves as the Director of the B.A. in English Language and Literature program and the undergraduate writing program. Vassiliki was instrumental in creating the University’s Writing Center and has served as its director since it was founded in 2006. She is currently co-leading a four-year longitudinal study for the University that will measure the progress that students make in their writing skills throughout their studies.

Nashua services are overseen by Rodger Martin, a teacher, journalist, and published poet and translator. Rodger brings extensive writing and teaching skills to the campus, having taught in both the United States and China and having served for many years as an editor of The Worcester Review.

Dr. Valentini Andreoula coordinates the Writer Center at the Athens campus. A CRLA-certified writing tutor, Valentini has been teaching in the University's undergraduate General Education program, particularly courses such as academic writing, public speaking, and critical thinking.

Faculty Mentors

Close mentoring Academic mentoring is an integral part of the Hellenic American University experience. When admitted to the University, students are assigned a faculty mentor (advisor), from their chosen discipline.

Students enroll in appropriate courses with counsel from their mentor (advisor). While faculty mentors have specific responsibilities, students also play an active part in the advising relationship. They are expected to initiate contact with their mentors, make final decisions about academic matters, and accept responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.

The faculty mentor works closely with the student to:

  • clarify, plan, and help develop the student’s educational and career goals
  • identify academic competencies that need to be acquired or enhanced
  • increase awareness of the full range of campus programs and services
  • recognize problems that might affect the student’s academic performance
  • refer students to the appropriate campus support services when needed
  • explore academic programs according to their personal development and career goals

The University places great emphasis on becoming autonomous, lifelong learners. Students are thus expected to take responsibility for and manage their own learning process, and to ask for assistance when needed.
