Conferences and Colloquia

As part of its research agenda and global outreach, Hellenic American University has sponsored or co-sponsored a series of important research-based conferences intended to address major issues in the fields which comprise its curricular concentrations.

Past Conferences and Colloquia

Prominent among the conferences the University has hosted or co-sponsored:

  • Distinguished Lecture Series: Dr. Costas Synolakis, President of Athens College, delivered the inaugural lecture in Hellenic American University’s Distinguished Lecture Series on January 31, 2023. The second lecture in the series was delivered on May 23, 2024 by the eminent endocrinologist and member of the Academy of Athens Dr. George Chrousos, who also serves as director of the University’s M.S. in Stress and Health Management program.
  • The 1st Terra (in) Cognita International Conference: Dialogues between Greek Culture and Modern American Art, organized by Hellenic American University and supported by Terra Foundation for American Art, was held in Athens November 10-13, 2022. The 4-day conference brought together 40 scholars and artists from the US, Greece, and elsewhere in Europe to present their research and discuss cross-cultural influences in the arts.
  • 3rd International Conference “Europe in Discourse: Tracing Identity through Values, History and Borders” (September 2022). The Conference took place on September 23rd-24th, 2022 with participants from more than 20 countries participating onsite and online to discuss European values, borders, and crisis. Special emphasis was given this year to the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • 2nd International Conference "Europe in Discourse: Agendas of Reform" (September 2018). The Conference took place from September 21st -23rd, 2018, and brought together an international audience from different disciplines to talk about the challenges facing Europe and the need for reform.
  • 1st international Conference on “Europe in Discourse: Identity, Diversity, Borders” (September 2016). Organized by Hellenic American University in cooperation with Hellenic American College, the Conference explored the discursive construction of identifies in and of the European Union. The Book of Abstracts and Conference Proceedings are available online.
  • 10th International Athens Conferences on Project Management Best Practices: Lean and Green Project Management (July 2015). Now in their 10th year, these conferences gather international speakers who offer practical and technical knowledge about getting ahead in the project management profession.
  • 3rd Athens International Forums on Security: Challenges and Opportunities for the New Decade (January 2010) These conferences have provided a fresh, in-depth look into information security technologies, policies, techniques, and best practices, affording front-line IT personnel and policymakers valuable insights into key information security issues.
  • 2nd International Athens Conference on Translation and Interpretation: Teaching and Researching the Practice: Translation Education, Professional Identity, New Technologies (October 2008), gathered theoreticians, linguists, translators, interpreters and educators from Greece and abroad to discuss issues of translation and interpreting.
  • 2nd Athens International Conference on University Assessment: Assessing Quality (October 2007). This was the second of two International Conferences on University Assessment which brought together leading institutional researchers, policy experts, and high-ranking accreditation officers from Europe and the United States in plenary talks and panel discussions.

Research Ethics and Policies

Research involving human subjects at Hellenic American University must be conducted in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, and codes set forth by a researcher’s professional organization. Hellenic American University maintains a Federal Wide Assurance (FWA) of Compliance (hereafter referred to as “Assurance”) with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Human Resource Protections (FWA #00022113). This Assurance is updated periodically and commits the University to adopting the ethical principles set forth in the Belmont Report and abiding by federal regulations for the protection of human subjects set forth in 45 Code of Federal Regulations Part 46.

Institutional Review Board
In following guidelines of best practice of academic research, the University uses its Institutional Research Board to assure that research is conducted ethically in cases where human subjects are involved and that findings are disseminated in a socially responsible manner.

All research involving human subjects conducted by University faculty, staff and students must receive approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

 

Research Institute

Research is a core activity of the University that brings together theory, application and creativity. From applied linguistics and psychology to computer science and photonics, the faculty’s expertise spans a broad range of scientific fields and seeks to expand knowledge and promote innovation.

The Research Institute facilitates faculty members and students to set and achieve their research goals. The Research Institute has a key role in:

  • promoting extroversion and scientific collaborations with external partners.
  • informing faculty about funding calls and consulting on the proposal preparation.
  • disseminating and promoting the research conducted at Hellenic American University;
  • organizing conferences, colloquia and invited talks hosted by the University;
  • suggesting long-term research plans and strategies to the University;
